Coalescence 2018

IIM Kashipur has always been at the forefront of bridging the gap between the academic curriculum and the industry requirement and the recently concluded first leg of “Coalescence 2018” bore testimonial to this very fact. IIM Kashipur hosted the Annual Management conclave “Coalescence 2018” on 4th and 5th August 2018. As part of the Management conclave, the annual “Marketing Summit” was held on 4th August which witnessed the presence of various industry leaders from the Marketing domain. On 5th August the annual HR meet “Samanvaya” was held which was graced by the presence of various leaders from the HR domain.

The first day of the conclave started off with the lamp lighting ceremony by faculty and guests. After a brief glimpse into the history of IIM Kashipur, Dr K.N. Badhani, Director, IIM Kashipur welcomed the gathering in his opening speech. He described the objective of the conclave as a means to bring industry stalwarts, students and faculties together. The eminent guests who graced the conclave with their presence were- Mr. Puneet Nagpal, Head Marketing, Sales and Marketing solutions, LinkedIn India; Ms. Megha Ahuja, Digital Media Professional; Mr. Stefan Haves, Founder and Creator, Stefinity Entertainment Inc.; Mr. Nomit Joshi, Head Marketing, Gionee India; Mr. Hitesh Sood, Associate Vice President, Idea Cellular Ltd.; Mr. Ashok VK, Director, Marketing Oncology, Dr. Reddy Laboratories.

The speakers spoke at length about the importance of Data and Analytics in marketing. According to them, Technology has empowered marketers with data. They stressed the importance of analysing the real-time data as it is generated. The speakers also touched on the topic “Digital Social Media and Consumer Behaviour” and told how social media can be used as a tool to connect with consumers with emotionally. They also discussed the different digital trends that are shaping India.

The speakers spoke on the topic “New Characteristics of Leadership: Transforming Business In The Digital Age”. They discussed the importance of adapting to technology. According to them, continual change is the business driver and people should get comfortable with ambiguity. They also provided their insights on the key aspects of leadership. They explained how leaders can be the emotional anchors for the team. They discussed how human beings can add value to skills through emotions. The speakers also spoke on the topic “Striking The Right Balance: Training, Development and Attrition”. They discussed the skill values of the future and how the recruitment strategy of an organisation should be aligned with it.

The event was a success. The students got to interact with the eminent personalities and learned about the latest trends and the happenings of the industry. The insights and experiences shared by speakers provided valuable learnings to the students.

Speaking on the Inauguration Ceremony Dr. Ghosh,Dean IIM Kashipur, said that we understand that students come here with two considerations. One – placements, and Two – Choice of place. “You will be equipped with success mantras here”, he said. “Organizations do not create jobs for you, it is for their own survival and growth and they need people, and they need the best ones. So what you would require is, “One – the basic understanding of the concepts of management, Two – on how to implement them in real life situations, and Three – the environment within which a manager works”, added Dr. Ghosh.

MDP on Supply Chain Management

Management Development Programme (MDP) – 23 to 27 June 2014, on Supply Chain Management, was inaugurated today at IIM Kashipur campus. Objective of the MDP is to build a multi-disciplinary team of knowledge workers who can understand interdependence of various business functions and levers that drive their performance. This program will also enhance the understanding of the participants in various cross functional areas like marketing concepts, customer’s relationships, apart from that looking the whole business in the perspective of supply chain process.

Guest Lecture: Mr. Nagaraju KB, COO at TVS Logistics Services Limited

IIM Kashipur welcomed Mr. Nagaraju KB, COO at TVS Logistics Services Limited. He is an IIM Calcutta alumni and had previously he has worked with Lenovo India Pvt Ltd and Transmart India Pvt Limited. Currently he is on sabbatical and working with an NGO. Coming from Operations field, Mr Nagaraju explained the students about “The Triple-A Supply Chain- Agility, Adaptability and Alignment”. He shared his experience in supply chain dictating the fact that Supply chain is a backbone to meet customer expectations. Along with arranging for logistics, supply chain very evidently includes planning and manufacturing. From his experience he compared the current scenario of industry with that in early 2000s. He said that the current industry is very demanding and the customers want product at their doorsteps at their preferred time. To achieve this managers have to necessarily go for a steep learning curve.

Mr Nagaraju explained the AAA supply chain model through experiences of his operations career in companies like Compaq India, Tata Motors, Lenovo, etc. He stressed upon the importance of localization of supply chain in order to achieve immediate demand of customized products by the consumers. He also very promptly answered queries of the students regarding supply chain and logistics. IIM Kashipur thanks him for his presence at the campus.

Media Conclave 2014

Recognizing the fact that the role of media in business is ever growing in today’s world, IIM Kashipur organized a Media Conclave on 15th February, 2014 (Saturday) to discuss the emerging role of media in various walks of life and business. The conclave had invited speeches and panel discussions from prominent dignitaries from media houses as well as some student presentations.

Welcoming the distinguished media persons, representatives of the industry as well as corporate and social media sector, Dr. Gautam Sinha, the Director of IIM Kashipur, threw open this conclave open for debate and discussion. Despite mass media industry playing a significant role in highlighting the inequalities in wealth, power and privileges, he expressed concern about the growth of giant multinational media corporations holding enormous power and influence over the content and form by the owners of media. He raised some basic but very relevant questions to the participants of the conclave.

Inaugurating the conclave, Mr. Shailesh Shah, said that India is the biggest producer of films and entertainment media, and that we need to enhance our partnership into it. Further, he said that this industry has a capacity of a turnover of over $ 100 billion. This was followed by a presentation by the Students.

The Post-break session saw an intense panel discussion with panelists comprising of Shri Asad Mirza, Shri R. Srinivasan, Shri Subimal Bhattacharya, Shri Anant Vijay, and Prof. K. M. Baharul Islam, functioning as the moderator. The invited questions from amongst the audience added further value to the discussion, with some of the responses being noted down by many, and some witty ones inviting laughter.

Today’s business world has umpteen examples of successful entrepreneurs. One such great example is of Naukri.com (Infoedge.com) co-founder Ms V N Saroja. Also the co-founder of Jeevansathi.com, Ms. Saroja led the students of IIM Kashipur through her journey from Indian Institute of Management Ahmadabad to being the CEO of Agriwatch.com and beyond. Starting with comparing the life and career options in early 1990s and today, she said she was fortunate to get an opportunity from big multinational organization to publish a status paper at the age of 22. She explained that starting a new venture is not easy. It took her partners and her six years to grow Naukri.com to where it stands today. They had to do all kind of jobs like editing and rewriting resumes of clients themselves and sitting for hours on a computer to upload those resumes on the internet.

Ms Saroja emphasised that the world is full of opportunities and a person has to be present at the right place at the right time to avail them. The only requirement is to find passion within you. One should be willing to take calculated risks, identify what went wrong, rectify it and move forward. Also, have confidence that your ideas will survive, irrespective of other external factors.

She also shared her experience of working in small villages in and around Delhi and converting them into some of the most respectable and fashionable areas. She said that the business world is changing at a very fast pace and people new to this world should be ready to expand their views to grasp the slightest of opportunities. The students of IIM Kashipur were thrilled to listen to such inspiring words.

Myntra at IIM Kashipur

The COO of Myntra.com, Mr. Ganesh Subramanian came to IIM Kashipur on Friday, 24th January. In a hearty interaction with the students, he recounted how Myntra, which started from a garage, climbed up the e-commerce ladder to become India’s largest online fashion store.

Myntra is fast growing into an e-commerce giant with over 1500 employees and over $75 million in funding from top investors like Tiger Global and Accel Partners. Recording a footfall of over 600 thousand each day, they have received prestigious awards like IAMAI’s Best Ecommerce Website of the year award for 2012 and Red Herring Global 100 award. Mr. Ganesh highlighted some important points along Myntra’s journey, right from its inception as a personalised t-shirt selling organisation in 2007 to capturing a 30% market share in online fashion e-commerce in 2013. He talked at length about the growing importance of continuously improving the supply chain of a company since it will be the differentiating factor that can tip the balance in favour of an organisation. He emphasised that always having an entrepreneurial and organic outlook towards business is the key since that is what creates a sense of goodwill and satisfaction among both employees and customers. In view of this, Myntra has collaborated with designers like Rohit Bal and Manish Arora to give shoppers the best and newest in fashion. Recently actor Hrithik Roshan launched his active lifestyle apparel and casual wear brand HRX exclusively on Myntra.

The students were keen to know Myntra’s future propositions and their strategy to delve into the huge semi-urban and rural market among other things, which Mr. Ganesh answered expertly. A thought from him that stayed with the students was,” If 8 out of 10 people reject your idea outright, I guarantee that it is a phenomenal one.”
